Ecological Roles:
Orthopterans play an important ecological role in many ecosystems. Firstly they play an important role in the food chain by providing an abundant amount of protein to their predators’ diets. Secondly they also provide nutrients to plants. Their droppings, called frass, contribute to nutrient turnover in the ecosystem by returning nutrients as fertiliser to plants (The University of Arizona 1997). |
