Structure for Sound Production:
The grasshoppers method for producing sound is called stridulation. Stridulation occurs when a specialised body structure called a scraper is rubbed against another structure called the file (Gullan and Cranston 2005). The file is located on the femora (legs) and the scraper is on the tegmina (fore wing) (Gullan and Cranston 2005).

The subfamily Oedipodinae, belonging to the suborder Caelifera, uniquely has an entirely different method of producing sound. This method is called crepitation, where the grasshopper will snap their hind wings together as they fly to create a crackling noise (Hadley, 2012).
